Leadership Training
Local 154 conducted its 4th Annual Leadership Training
and Certification Program on November 13th and 15th at District Council 37. The
Training was organized by Vice-President Mark Heron along with Larry Kelly of
the Education Department of DC37 and Marianella Santana, our distinguished
Council Representative. The training covered roles of Shop Stewards, and union
representatives, it also reviewed specific issues within our various contracts,
and themes related to concerns frequently raised by union members.
Local 154 officers handle 11 contractual agreements
covering more than 20 titles that it represents. Knowledge and understanding of
the subject matter in the contracts is crucial in order to properly inform the
members. Sometimes members in the same title are covered by different
agreements. Knowing the difference could be the factor determining whether a
case would be won or a member's job would be in jeopardy.
Local 154 wants our members to be adequately informed
about issues of concern to them as members and this training is just one of the
conduits that are used. Our philosophy is that an informed union member is a
strong union member.
Diana Thillet, Shop Steward for our Claims Specialists
at the Law Department in the Bronx, proud recipient of a certification, stated
that she "..enjoyed the training and it was very good to add to her
knowledge about the Rights of Union members." President Juan Fernández
added, "We will continue to hosts forums like this to continue to inform
our members; we want them to be active and involved."
